Artist/Gallery notes

Adlai Stevenson said this of Eleanor Roosevelt in New York Times 8 November 1962. I was painting on the front verandah of a house in a small rural village in the North East of Thailand. For me a place of unbelievable beauty. A landscape of rice fields, trees and lakes. As I painted people would come and look at my work and say "suay". Lao for beautiful. Early in the morning I would line up outside the house with the other villagers to give food to the monks from the local temple, then the water buffalo would go past on their way to pasture, then the children in their school uniforms walking or riding to school. Throughout the day vendors would pass blasting the air with their loudspeakers and selling food, or beds, toys and everything, while I continued to paint memories of Perth. This painting was one of the three I did of Freshwater Bay reflecting the different moods of the Swan, This is the most delicate of the works with the pinks, reds and violets of dawn.
