Perth is one of the most remote cities in the world as it is thousands of kilometres from the nearest major city. It got its name "City of Lights" from John Glenn the astronaut. In 1962 as he circled the globe at night he could see the lights of Perth as a beacon isolated in the surrounding black desert and sea. The people of Perth put on a display for him by turning on their lights at the time he passed overhead.
